Specialty expertise helps your tooth to bounce back from traumatic dental injuries

“Trauma,” as defined in medical circles, refers to “physical injuries to living tissues caused by extrinsic (external) agents.” “Dental” is in reference to a tooth and the practice of dentistry. Here at Endodontics Associates of Georgia, we are well-accustomed to successfully treating severe forms of traumatic dental injuries. After all, endodontic treatments are designed to resolve often painful symptoms and the source of that pain at the center of the tooth: the innermost pulp structure. The injuries and trauma diagnosed and resolved by our endodontists in Atlanta, Drs Damaries Candelario-Soto, Yanina Figueroa, Joseph Yoo, Shaletha Bolden, and Yasir Al-Drugh, may occur as the result of contact with objects during sports, falls, vehicle accidents, and other forces or impacts to the teeth.

Our team has focused specialty training to save teeth that are loose, fractured, dislodged, avulsed (knocked-out), or otherwise severely damaged. We complement our team’s advanced knowledge with technologies that precisely pinpoint underlying conditions, provide clear and detailed insights into anatomical features, and conservatively and effectively treat and preserve the tooth. All these characteristics add up to a gentle, comfortable, and safe experience and excellent and predictable treatment outcomes.

A tooth that is partially or even fully dislodged from its socket can be repositioned and stabilized and then successfully treated with root canal therapy; however, moments often matter in these situations. For instance, an avulsed tooth must be placed carefully back in its socket. Take great care not to disturb the tissues attached to the tooth. If you can’t reinsert it, put it in a sealed and sterile container with milk or water with a pinch of salt to function as a preservative until we can aid in re-rooting the tooth.

A note on maturing teeth

It is critical to preserve the health of the pulp as a tooth matures. The tooth depends on the pulp for nourishment during this crucial formative stage. For this reason, our specialists will recommend prompt treatment of damaged pulp tissue among pediatric patients whose teeth have not fully matured. Apexogenesis, for example, is a regenerative treatment to encourage a stronger tooth root. The idea is to support the growth of the roots. So, they can then close the apex or opening at the end of the tooth roots adequately. During apexification, medication may be placed to promote tissue development at the root tips. That helps protect the tooth from harmful bacteria that may re-enter, recolonize, and reinfect the tooth.

Just as “dental trauma” can mean many different things, treatment to resolve these injuries also comes in various forms when you seek the highly specialized expertise of an endodontist.
