What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Have you ever wondered what’s inside your tooth? Beneath the visible outer covering—the enamel—lies the dental pulp that houses nerves, blood vessels, and other connective tissues. Your tooth internals become inflamed or infected when you have dental trauma or infection. Unfortunately, antibiotics or natural body immunity can’t cure this tooth infection.

A root canal eliminates infection within the tooth by removing the diseased pulp tissue. This not only relieves pain but also saves your tooth from extraction.

What Are The Warning Signs Of A Root Canal?

You need root canal treatment when your dental pulp has an infection. Typically, your pulp chamber is protected by the tooth structure surrounding it. Unfortunately, deep cavities, cracks, or faulty dental work can allow unwanted bacteria to infiltrate the pulp chamber. When the pulp chamber is infected or inflamed, you’ll experience the following symptoms:

  • An excruciating toothache that doesn’t go away
  • A painful tooth, mainly when you apply pressure to it
  • Tooth sensitivity, especially when consuming hot and cold foods
  • Swollen face or gums
  • A recurrent pimple-like swelling on your gums
  • Tooth discoloration as the pulp chamber dies off

How Are Root Canals Performed?

For many people, root canal treatment may cause anxiety. Dentistry has come a long way, and modern root canals are nothing to worry about. Thanks to powerful anesthetics and gentle procedures, our root canals are no more painful than a cavity treatment.

The procedure starts with administering local anesthetics. We’ll only proceed with treatment when the numbing takes effect. Then, we’ll isolate your tooth with a rubber dam to prevent saliva contamination. The next step is to create an access hole in your tooth, which we’ll use to flush out the diseased pulp chamber.

Next, it’s time to clear and sanitize your empty chamber and canals to remove all traces of harmful bacteria. Instead of using manual instruments, we use the GentleWave®Procedure. This system uses fluid dynamics to debride and disinfect even the tiniest crevices that manual tools can’t reach.

After thorough hygiene care, the doctor fills your tooth with a rubbery gutta-percha material to prevent future infections. Finally, we will seal the access hole with a dental filling, but if your tooth is significantly weakened, we’ll restore it with a dental crown.
